Born in Ash near Dover in 1967, Paul a wicket-keeper and right-handed bat, played 40 first class matches for Kent and Middlesex between 1987 and 1995.
However, it is as a coach that he has had the greatest impact, starting in 2000 with England’s Under 19 side and the England Women’s Team. In 2007 Paul joined Trevor Bayliss as Sri Lanka’s Assistant Coach. He then became Kent CCC First Team Coach in 2010 followed by a spell as Second IX Coach at Yorkshire CCC, where in different circumstances he may have gone on to become First XI coach following Jason Gillespie’s departure.
In late 2013, Paul took the role of coach to the Sri Lankan national side, where he enjoyed considerable success culminating in Sri Lanka winning the 2014 Twenty20 World Cup. He next embarked on what was to become a five-year spell as Assistant Coach with England, first under Peter Moores, then after an interlude as interim coach, he was reunited with Trevor Bayliss with whom he had worked in Sri Lanka.
Paul left the England team in 2019 to become Sporting Director of Warwickshire CCC before moving back into coaching, as Head Coach of Sussex, who this year have of course just won the Championship Division 2, with Yorkshire as runners up.
